Morganite Details

Morganite is a pretty pastel colored variety of Beryl. This is the same species as an Aquamarine or Emerald and is a 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale which means it is quite durable and hard.  This gemstone is heat treated to bring out the pink color and reduce any yellow or orange colors, this is a normal practice resulting in a color that will not fade.  Strong colors in morganites are rare and these desirable colors are usually only found in the larger specimens.  A morganite has pleochroism which means that when you move the stone slightly the colors will change! Most morganites are transparent and eye clean.

This gemstone has been around for millions of years, but it wasn't until 1911 when it was named after JP Morgan that the stone became more well-known. Morgan was one of the most important gem collectors in the early 1900's  The color of these stones are quite soothing and calming and are used in gemstone therapy for stress relief.

Most of the morganite on the market comes from pegmatite mines in Minas Gerais, Mozambique, Brazil. Afghanistan, Namibia, and the US have been minor and inconsistent sources.
